vet services.. ???

so what is everyone that has a large animal in the Hlfx/Dartmouth/Sackville/Beaverbank/and surrounding areas going to do now that our two vets in the area are no longer going to be handling large animals... ?????????? I'm really not happy about paying 1.39 per kilometer for a vet to come in from the valley or Shubenacadie... nor am I happy if I should happen to need emergency care!!!!!!!! What to do

You're about the same distance, or maybe even a little closer, to Shubie as me. Just make sure you get everyone in the barn done on at the same time and split the mileage. Emergencies suck though. I paid $450 the night I had to have Maj put down. 3/4 of that was mileage .

You will like Trevor though, I have nothing but great things to say about him.

which vets stopped handling large animals Wissy? I use Dr West she doens't really do large animals but she's a friend so she does our barn

Hey Wissy, we're in the same situation. A couple people have referred Trevor Lawson at Fundy.

Sackville Animal Hospital (Paul Kendal and Vanessa Churchill ) will no longer be looking after large animals come Jan 2010... sad sad day.. I guess it maybe fundy vet for us.. not sure what the Bleeding heart to do now..

You can also haul your horse to the vets for shots and stuff like that, cheaper for you to do that than them come to you.. as for emergency horse vet after the last time I will put ours on the trailer and head to PEI still cheaper than getting a vet to come .. found that out the hard way..

CJ, Yes I thought of that.. you'd think there would be more large animals vets local for us.. apparently there are 1,900.00 horse in our general area.. but I guess there's more money in small animals then large..

Wissy why wouldn't you use Avon they are pretty close to you guys and they are really good thats who we use to use

We are on PEI (so maybe hard to believe but we'd do the same if we lived off Island) we pop our on the trailer to the AVC - why pay big $$$ for one vet at your barn with minimal equipment when you can spend the same and have four vets looking plus all the equipment right on site...

You can get Cornwallis vets in Three Mile Plains just outside of Windsor.

Sometimes putting a horse on a trailer isn't a option. :(

Some horses won't load or are in much need of something such as stitches. As nice as it sounds to just 'pop' a horse on a trailer, it is not an easy or obtainable answer for some :(

I've know a few horses to head to PEI after our vet was out because they needed more care (surgery, etc) . Only to get to the bridge and not be able to go across because of high winds and had to sit on the NB side with a horse in the trailer in desperate need of more medical attention. After a period of time they were finally allowed to cross.
They were given drugs before leaving for PEI, if need be, but if you have a horse colicing and you rush to PEI without drugs on hand you might end up in quiet a mess.
I know it's not something that happens a lot.. but it CAN!

I am speaking in the sense of emergencies, regular checks wouldn't be an issue, but in emergencies seconds count.
