Shavings Minis...

I'm getting anxious - we shaved part of our Appy Mini mare last night (just a patch off her neck) and underneath looks nothing like her winter coat!!! We got her last fall and she already had her winter fuzz so we havn't seen her summer duds!!! I think she is going to look pretty funky!!

How much longer do you think I need to wait to shave her all? She runs in and out... I'm new to the mini thing - when do folks usually shave them? Mid-May?

Geesh D...I dont shave my legs till July and I've had them 57years.......dont have a clue about a mini though. :bounce:

Well my anxiousness overcame me... I'll blanket her :P

LOL and just to clarify how impatient I am - I used a big honkin' pair of cattle clippers and lets just say the job I did is pitiful :lol: I couldn't do her legs, some of her belly, close to her eyes, or around her muzzle.

Anyhoo here is Rosie last fall....








And here is Rosie today!!! I know a bath would do her wonders :D I do believe she is white under that PEI red mud stain :D :D Now I just have to find myself a small little pair of clippers so she doesn't look like a Miniature Horse with a Draft Horse head :P

LOL - you know me too well :P It took an awful lot of effort to "trim carefully" around it when I could have just ZINGED it off :D :D

I have a question...

Why do people shave minis? Do they not shed out like regular horses...?

I see you clip just like me.. dangerous person to give clippers too.. well Gunnar looked good in the barn, it wasn't until I got him out in the daylight I discovered he didn't look so good.. wonder if I'll do any better job this year.. I never posted pics.. cause it didn't look great.. lol.. D your brave.. cute mini..

LOL Wissy come on now :P I am use to shearing sheep - we don't go for pretty... I had her sheared in about 5 minutes flat... I must get some points for speed It didn't help that she hasn't been done before... :roll:

TC - I actually asked both people that I got my Minis from if they shaved theirs and if I would have to shave them or if I could just leave them be... because I figured people just got sick of brushing the long thick winter coat out....

The response I got from them (and they both own several and have for years) was that I would have to shave them - that they wouldn't be shed out until sometime in late July and they would be itchy and miserable especially since we drive ours so much (the sweat build up and such).

We do still have Judy Lynne :) She is such a doll - she is next on the shaving list but that should be a walk in the park after doing Rosie.... LOL and then I'll post pictures of the "good" job the lady that previously owned her did and my hack job with the cattle clippers :P hehe then you can really give me heck Wissy!!

Do NOT show her a mirror! I thought Thunder had a wicked punk hairdo when I do his bridle path. But Rosie has him beat! I really like her spots - she's going to be stunning when she finishes shedding out. Or should I say when you fine tune your shearing! Thanks for being brave enough to post pictures so we could all get a visual. First laugh I've had in a few days.

A LEOPARD APP MINI MARE!!!!!! with mucho mane and tail...........she is incredible..............I love the do!!!!!!

I emailed a couple "expert" Mini owners to find out what I need to do to fix up her head, legs, between her front legs, and near her udder - all the places I wasn't brave enough to use the cattle clippers. I can fix up the hack job I did on her body with the big clippers though :)

Brittany's little mare Judy Lynne is next on the chopping block.... She looks so nicely clipped when we got her.... If only I could get their heads and ears trimmed properly... you can compare how nice Judy looked last summer to the disaster I'm about to create :twisted: I best tell hubby I need more Minis to practise on :D :D
