Eating seaweed... Empty
PostSubject: Eating seaweed...   Eating seaweed... Icon_minitimeSat Dec 19, 2009 10:13 pm

The fellow that takes care of my horses said that today the horses ate a pile of seaweed. The seaweed was in the corner of their paddock and was to be put on the garden in the spring. For some odd reason, the horses uncovered the seaweed (it was covered in snow) and ATE it all! They have a salt lick, but I guess they needed more! They have plenty of good quality hay to eat. I checked them this evening and no one seems any worse for their meal.

Now you might ask how much seaweed? It would fill the back of half ton truck! I bet they would be some thirsty! They have a huge tank filled with water.

Does anyone know why these three strange horses ate so much seaweed? One of the horses LOVES to drink seawater when we are at the beach. We don't let him cause it can cause colic and dehydration.

An example of the good properties found in different seaweeds...

Kelp and seaweed benefits

Maybe the ponies are lacking in something...or trying to balance something out? Or maybe the salty taste enticed them?

That's alot of seaweed to eat in one sitting. I know that traditionally the horses/ponies around here were fed seaweed and kelp on a regular basis. I think it's supposed to be good for their coat as well as providing salt.

Hi,

I know for sure that goats are supposed to have Kelp Meal available to them free choice. If they eat alot of it they are lacking in something. Sometimes they might not want any, sometimes they want to eat more.

As for horses, I know some people that feed them Kelp Meal. I've started adding a bit to the evening grain (a tablespoon) but I really don't know if this is too much, too little, if they should be having it free choice like goats, not sure.

Anyway, glad your horses aren't any worse for wear.

That is a lot of seaweed, but between 3 horses it might not be that much. I would watch them for colic but I wouldn't be overly concerned. You need to provide them with some kind of mineral, either a loose mineral from the feed store or something like kelp (maybe more seaweed???). Smart horses.

Just to let you guys know that everyone involved in eating a truck load of seaweed are doing great. No colic or salt poisoning.

I went and bought free choice minerals and a blue salt lick. I put the minerals in their feed trough and they ate some. They still have some seaweed left, you know to nibble on every once and a while.

Iodine toxicity is a worry with kelp, so you may want to watch them for that too. Glad to hear they are doing good! :)
