| I want to start ponying Thunder when I ride Skipper so that Kayla and I can go out of the ring together. I know that Thunder ponied years ago but I want to make sure that they boys have their s*$@ sorted out before I attempt it with Kayla. I've never ponied before so I'm looking for some suggestions on how to go about introducing it, etc. The boys are turned out together so they are used to each other - I just want to ensure that they don't do anything "scarey" when Kayla is involved. | |

| A couple things I can think of... most you likely already know though...
nice soft cotton rope is always a good idea so you don't burn your hand....
don't attach the rope directly to you or your saddle...
trying to keep the pony/horse on the same side and the rope in the same hand...this tends to keep your from getting in a tangled up mess...
don't let the pony get in front of you...

| I try doing some ground work first..
I always use a rope halter... and I make sure the "pony'ee" is going to be light on the line.. will start to jog if I jog, slow down and/or stop if I slow or stop... etc.
Then, once on the "pony'er" with the "pony'ee"....(lol) I will make sure all the same buttons work before heading out.
Biggest mess I have seen that can happen, is if the horse you are on, spooks, or vice versa, and gets sideways..the lead rope can end up under your horse's tail...and that can create the potential for a huge cluster f**k... (Pardon my french..lol)

| Oh TC, your nomenclature (there's a word for ya!) made me laugh! Luckily neither of the boys spook at much of anything so hopefully I won't turn things into a cluster f@%*. Next nice day we have I'm going to give it a try in the ring, but make sure that Fronie is there too in case I need a 3rd hand. Plus I'll arm her with a camera so thata everyone can share my experience! Thanks for the tips, and keep them coming if you think of any more! | |

| I had to pony a horse unexpectantly a couple winters ago when my idiot paint gelding dumped my friends little girl and took off. I caught up to him on Dex and grabbed the reins then brought him home. I was terrified that he was going to spook again and get us into a cluster f@*k as TC would put it. It turned out okay, actually the paint seemed to like being glued to Dex and it calmed him down. I'm sure Thunder and Skipper won't be morons though and you'll be fine. | |

| a friend of mine used to pony her horse from one barn to another, not a far way but still at least 15 or so minutes away.. she always kept him on one side and very close to her leg.. he liked it and ponyed well.. I guess common sense is the key thing as well.. Tammy I think you will do just fine, you have two very good subjects to work with! And yes pics are a must.. tell Fronie to get al lot of them.. lol | |

| I've done it a number of times when I lived in SJ as the riding arnea I used was about a km away. My suggestion, do it in the arena while on your horse, have someone play the part of the pony horse, where you have one end of the rope and they walk with the other end of the rope, take it and go behind the horse's butt. See how your horse will react with this. Then with someone there holding the pony while you are riding the horse. Have them do somewhat the same thing, then have them hand you the lead of the pony, but stay there in just case. Make use to turn make both right and left circles, stop, backup. Trot if you feel they can do it. And then slowly have your helper go further and further away so they can now take better pictures of the whole adventure.
I know when I did it with Flicka and Dealer, it was one session in the arena and they were good to go out on the road. And I know we couldn't trot, as Dealer was a lazy bum. Make sure the pony doesn't try to bite the horse, and I know Flicka would put on her angry ears and all I had to do was tell her to smarten up and she would be fine. If needed, I'd move her butt over to remind her that I had full control and she wasn't allowed to act on her own to kick out.
It was funny, I had to bring a friends pony from one barn to the other. So here I am on Flicka, with this 45 year old hackney pony, who was jigging/trotting the whole way with us, he was having a blast. We were going slow enough so he could have walked if he wanted too, but no. Everyone was saying what a cute foal he was to be going like this with his mommy.. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. They rolled over laughing when I told them the ages of the two of them.
