Need a new saddle pad Empty
PostSubject: Need a new saddle pad   Need a new saddle pad Icon_minitimeMon Feb 08, 2010 11:14 am

Since I can't go any narrower in western saddles (semi QH bars) I need to invest in a good pad that has built up withers. Dex is a funny shaped creature to say the least and I think he would really appreciate some extra padding. Does anyone here use one of these? Is it a name brand like Professionals Choice, Reinsman or a no-name? Good or bad experiences? Is there a difference between an ortho pad and a wither relief pad or is that a term used interchangeably?

I used one once, only for a short period of time to help my saddle fit but then started using a saddle that fitted so it was no longer needed. I think it was Griffith brand. I still have it actually and don't use it anymore if your interested. Its got fleece underneath that looks like it brand new cause i hardly used it.

Send me a picture if you could. I've been looking at a Professionals Choice air ride OrthoSport pad but I'm not sure if I want to spend that much money just yet.

I wasn't able to find much info online for the Griffith pads, where did you get it from?

Have you seen these SD:

http://www.rocler.qc.ca/portlewis/

I have a client who has the impression pad and does fittings, its pretty cool. The custom pads are costly at around $300 but its custom to your horse and if your horse changes shape you can adjust the pad. I know that Lesley Guy in NS also does fittings. As long as your saddle isn't too small it will basically cutom fit it.

That's pretty high tech BH. If I were going to be riding seriously several times a week, I would definitely look into one of those. I think one the OrthoSport pad should provide what Dex needs though.

RKB - I saw those pads when I was looking at the Professional Choice ones. I'm not a big fan of the fleece though and I think I'm gonna go with the OrthoSport.

It has the built up support right in the hollow behind his withers where he needs it. Thanks for trying to help though.

That's the one I bought last spring with my saddle - LOVE IT! Fits right in the pocket behind Arrow's withers....stays where you put it & so does the saddle!

This premium, contoured pad provides the essential fit that prominent withered, strong-shouldered horses need to achieve an optimum level of comfort.
With a second layer of shock absorbing material strategically located in the dished out area behind the shoulders, this pad creates a greatly improved saddle fit from front to back. Additional layers of this same breathable, shock absorbent material are channeled down each side of the spine to relieve pressure from the spine and kidney area while allowing additional airflow along the horse’s back. I bought the blue one....

Okay, so after yammering about it with Wayne here in Truro for atleast 45 minutes, I bought the Cavallo bridge pad to try. Dex is rather sway backed which is likely causing bridging in the middle and digging in at the front. More than I wanted to spend but I can try it on and return it if necessary.

Quote :
The ideal solution for a saddle that is too tight at the withers yet lifts off at mid-back. Thinner at the front and rear and raised in the middle, this pad reestablishes consistent pressure along the horse’s back while easing saddle fit discrepancy. Lightweight and shock absorbing, the Bridge TSP maintains spinal and wither relief throughout the gullet, while ensuring more comfort and stability.

I have been looking at them as well. What I wonder is those no slip ones, they have almost like a rubber backing - wouldn't those be very hot on the horse? I would think fleece would be more comfortable. I also have a neoprene cinch and it just doesn't seem "nice" to have the rubber against him. What do you all prefer?
Thanks

I've never used a tacky too pad but, you're right, it seems like it would be hot. This Cavallo pad is more like neoprene on the bottom, actually it's reversable so you can have the felt side down if you want. It also has air channels along it's midline that allow the heat to dissipate.

The thing I don't like about fleece is that if the horse gets really sweaty then the pad gets wet and gross. I wouldn't want that against me either if I were a horse.

They sound quite nice - I like the air channel idea. I see Cavallo has some sales on now on their website. I'm also looking at the splint boots.
