BOY DO I NEED SOME HELP Empty
PostSubject: BOY DO I NEED SOME HELP   BOY DO I NEED SOME HELP Icon_minitimeThu Aug 05, 2010 12:08 pm

I am breaking Ponie (or attempting I should say) and for the last 2 days she has been a bugger about taking the bit. I even tried driving her last night with the reins hooked to the bit. Boy, did she freak. I unhooked from there and hooked to her halter. She drove like an old pro doing circles, turnnig and whoa. We have backed her many times, added some rein pressure with the bit and she doesn't like it at all. But when we ask her to bend with just the halter on she is an old pro again. Now, here is my question for all of you. Do I keep trying to force her to take the bit or do I change to a bosal (my choice) and go from there?? HELP ME!!

I can't really help because Prince is still driving from a halter, I've be procrastinating trying a bit. How old is Ponie? I guess I'm hesitant with Prince because of his teeth right now. I think he's losing caps and getting wolf teeth in...I see him "playing" with his tounge a lot...looks like he's sore and rubbing his gums. I don't want to add a bit to the mix and make him more uncomfortable. Maybe Ponie has some teeth issues too at the moment????

She is 3 and I was thinking she is having problems with her teeth but she does not mind me sticking my fingers in her mouth. I am hoping she is just a horse that needs a bosal. She is so happy with just the saddle on and halter I don't want to hinder any developmnet right now. It is just perlexing.

I would almost bet it's teeth - here is a great chart. I'd keep working her in the halter...she is trying to tell you something!

I think it is her teeth also. Now that I think about it she has a spot on her face that puffed a little ( not sore and she definately has not slowed down on eating. The puffiness is gone but I think she may have been teething. I am going to keep her in the halter and maybe try a bosal. She is going on a little vacation to a trainer to help me with her. I think he should use one on her also. It is just so depressing when she was doing so well and now I feel I have put her back 3 steps. Thanks for the advice!!!

GOOD NEWS. I got Ponie looked @ and she is loosing her caps so it is a tooth problem. I lunged her and drove her last night with just the halter and she was a pro again. HAPPY TO KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON. now to work and then the Irish lass arrives.

What about a sidepull?

My equine dentist mentioned to me the last time he was here that a lot of trainers won't take a young horse on for training before their wolf teeth have been removed because they can be such a hinderance. I don't ride with a bit, but I've noticed a huge change in Beauty's behaviour since having her teeth done and her wolf teeth removed.

Great news. Like you said, it's nice to know what was causing her behaviour. They DO have their ways of letting us know, don't they?!
