PostSubject: Breeding Via AI   Breeding Via AI Icon_minitimeSat Sep 18, 2010 11:33 am

Hi there Ladies!!

Just wondering if anyone has had experience with breeding their mare with AI, I have been debating on breeding Kallie next year this way. She was very stressed when she went for breeding this year, and next year she would have a foal on her side. She hasn't been moved around much and for the first ten years of her life she lived out in a big field with a bunch of other broodmares, so being moved around a lot stresses her out. She caught well which was great, but I worry about her stress level especially with a foal at her side, plus I would loose 2-4 weeks of time with the foal to work with it if I had to send her away to be bred again.

Thanks in advance!

AI is very costly, and not always effective the first try. Would you be shipping semen? Frozen, cooled?

That being said, it sure can save wear and tear on a horse!

I have used AI and it was succesful, I had an aged maiden mare and it took a bit of time to get her caught and stay pregnant (the vet figured she would catch then loose them) we ended up putting her on regumate after she was bred and she had a healthy colt. If your mare catches easily I wouldn't think there would be much problem getting her caught. Good luck!

Yes shipping semen, preferably in Canada, I have heard both good and bad stories about semen coming from the USA. Not sure if it will be Frozen or cooled, will depend on what is available depending on the stud I chooe.

Kallie does breed easily, once she is relaxed, the vet said we would put her on regumate to ensure a planned heat, and thankfully she shows her heat well and doesn't hide it like some mares but also isn't a lady slipper when she is in heat :D

We bred two mares via AI for foals that arrived this past spring...

I'm not sure on how your horse breeding budget looks but budget to do the breeding twice... not the stud fee but the needling, the ultrasounds, the collecting, the insemination, vet calls, and more ultrasounds!

We were VERY pleased with the folks we dealt with; they were AI about collecting.

Ours biggest issue was false heats which meant a pile of ultrasounds...neither of our mares saw a "true" cycle until June and we couldn't needle them until they had completed a "true" cycle. This won't be an issue for you as your mare is currently in foal and will cycle after foaling.

The cost of vet visits/ultrasounds quickly ads up. We found it to be VERY expensive (despite having the AVC so close) and depending on your "breeding goals"... we have since determined living in Atlantic Canada we will never get any type of return on the amount we have invested in our foals. They're dandy little foals but we'll take a loss on them when they sell.
