PostSubject: THE LONG AND SHORT OF IT   Mon Jun 20, 2011 2:43 pm

My mare's mane is growing out but it is really thick. When it gets damp or it rains it gets poufy and uncontrollable. I really would like to shorten it but we have very small aspirations of doing reining and reiners prefer long manes. If I show this year it will be in halter only I think. Do I thin it or do I shorten and pull it and start all over again?? I go back and forth every day. I have had the scissors out and then chickened out. Then it rains and I cuss at it. I have heard that you can band a long mane and if it is thinned could this be an option?? HELP!!

I agree with Jill,
thin it! I have a gelding with an unruly mane, and thinning shears are my best friend, since he wont stand pulling for that long (neither will my fingers!)

Plus, you'd want to thin it to shorten it anyway, still leaves the option :)

Sounds like my hair. LOL. My horse has the same type of mane but it's thin enough, it's O.K. Good luck taming the mane.

Roach it! I love a roached mane. Beautiful, clean, cool and easy to maintain :)

Well I shorten it. I tried to thin it and it was awful. It looks great now, just needs to be touched up in a couple of spots. Will post pictures tomorrow.
