Has anyone had their horse diagnosed with Cushings using a blood test? Are there vets in Northern NS that do this?

I had a pony with Cushings and I read a lot about Cushings disease and horses the blood test is not very accurate. If you think your horse or pony has Cushings put them on Chasteberry, I bought mine at the heath food store under the brand name Vitex. My pony was very severe and old, had a seizure, he was really really bad but the Vitex was like a miracle and I got another year but he foundered again so I put him down.

We have a horse with Cushings, which is being controlled with Pergolide; we tested by doing an ACTH blood test instead of dex suppression, which can trigger laminitis. (He had already foundered). An excellent source for information is http://www.ecirhorse.com/

thanks. I just received a letter from a vet through that website explaining the ACTH test and why not to allow the vet to do the other 'gold standard' testing.

Do you regulate the amount of Pergolide over the year? I read that there is a seasonal change (an increase in need) from August to December. This is when my guy seems worse and why I suspect Cushings. AND he has already tested VERY IR

Jim has been on Pergolide since the summer; we also had him tested for IR, but this was done after I had made dietary changes since I suspected strongly that he would be. Our vet is not strongly versed in the disorder, so I've been kind of winging it and found the website I mentioned and also joined their group at Yahoo. Don't know what I would have done without them :) It's true that there are seasonal rises in ACTH~ in a perfect world with unlimited cash (certainly not my world!) I would have tested him again...things are going pretty well right now, so I'm going to carry on with his current dosage and will re-test before spring to see if it needs to be adjusted.

April is when he foundered last year, even though he had no access to grass and hay was being soaked. I am hoping, REALLY hoping with the change in diet and meds we won't have another episode....that was the second time in a year that he foundered vets and Cushings 336163

I'm curious what Pergolide costs monthly on average for one horse?

It depends on what dosage your horse requires; our horse is doing well at 1mg/day. I buy it in encapsulated powder form, 100 at a time. Lasts 100 days and the cost is approx. $202.00 I order 3 weeks before I run out as it seems to take that long to get here:)
