Do any of you trail ride with your dogs?

If so, do you bring anything with you? Do you avoid certain trails? Have any safety tips? Do you do any work with horse/dog together prior to heading out?

My dog is high energy and I feel a walk around a few blocks isn't enough. I have gone on trails with him before but never alone. Last night he came out to the barn with me and after greeting 4 dogs friendly, not barking, and calmly standing at the stall door while I brushed Willow I decided to try it.

I walk with dog and horse in hand until I get on to the trail (or far enough away from the road) and he doesn't go out of sight from us off leash. He high tails it around and has a blast.. He did an hour ride last night and stopped stopped at the beach for a drink - He is one tired dog today I avoid any trails/fields that have a house/people or pets.

My horse doesn't mind him darting in and out of bushs/grass and it is hilarious when he runs ahead in front I can feel her pick up her pace to keep up with him! I am very proud of her for not only hacking solo, but being so patient with my Wilson.

To get out there alone with my two favorite Wil's was an amazing feeling.. so relaxing.. I actually enjoy my dogs presence as I don't feel so silly for talking out loud. hahah Wilson won't go close to Willow because he is slightly afraid of her in his space.

My friend brings her dogs when we go and they are in and out of the woods and puddles, they are good around the horses and follow along nicely. They are very people friendly, and very well socialized so no worries when we encounter other people dogs ect...
When I had a dog I used to bring a lead rope just incase I needed to attatch to the dog. I had her trained to jump up on the horses shoulder so I could clip her on. My horse was very good with the dog and the dog respected her space unless I asked her. I think it is great for the dog, you can't beat the excersize they get when they are out with the horses!

I think the dog loveeeed it.

I always hack with a leather halter now.. my rope reins have snaps which could quickly convert to a lead rope if need be. I figured worse case scenario I would tie my horse to a tree and go get the dog (I tied his leash around the horn)

I have a remote collar that is good up to 70 yards.. I'm thinking this may be worth while should I ride with the dog often?

He's great with horses, he's curious but yet afraid which means he will follow but not too close which I'm sure Willow appreciates. :)

Its good to ride with a dog who runs in and out of the trees, its makes the horse less nervous..If something would come runing out of the woods, they may not get has spooked ..But us riders would.. :)

Yes dogs are good for flushing out partridge and those types of birds, so you are not on top of them before they fly and spook the horses. I find horses are relaxed with the dogs running about.
