My friend and our barn owner are presently trying to rescue a horse whose "going for dog food on Saturday"

Problem - he's a stallion presently.

anyone know how much it costs aprox. to have a horse castrated? I've only ever had mares

We were quoted $250-$300 just recently. You might try Dr. Murch...he will do field calls and if you have more than one horse to geld there is also sometimes a reduced rate.

Helping a horse in need 524346_10150661826895665_505490664_9828386_1895182180_n

This was photo advertised on kijiji for a horse for a young horse for sale. While I don't know whats going on in the photo and I'm not one to judge a person's training methods from one photo alone - this should never be on a sale ad - In my opinion.

So turns out many years ago my friend bought a young colt from this place.... there are photos of him in the exact same rig :( She was 14 an didn't know much.. The horse was "Major Cash Back" and his name should just have been Take Cash Back lol he had crooked legs and was very badly put together. (wasn't bred by this person! someone abandoned him there, long story)

The horse above is out of his "pure mustang from out west" and his TB/Arabian stud.. He breeds horses because he "loves them and not for the money" the first few ads didn't even spell "Saturday" right, but the new ad spoke of horse psychology and that the colts calm behaviour is attributed to being raised with his uncut brother and father?

So the guy was at my friend (and roomates) work and mention a horse for sale and told her that he is sending him to slaughter this weekend but if she wants him for free to go get him.... She started to cry because she's not in a position and already has a one horse she pays for.

As soon as I found this out I got on the phone with my Barn owner. And he said he may be in a position to rehab him and take as much time needed to find a good home. (he already has 4 rescues (2 OTT Standardbreds and 2 from a horse siezure)

Friend went to see him Thursday night. He's not gelded (which I knew but forgot in the hype of the moment) so were lookrd into raising funds BO could have him vaccinated during the annual barn shots next week and schedule th appointment for then. Vet did quote 250-300

BO is picked up my friend from work with the trailer and they are going to get him last night. Appointment to be gelded is Tuesday. The horse's owner came to my friend's work yesterday and was rude also said "next time don't show up without a trailer"

BO has the land for another horse (good timing because they are going on pasture soon) Plans are to just allow him to grow up a little, teach him some manners & respect, and then rehouse him or keep him depending on a few factors. My BO doesn't ride - just has pasture ornaments so it will be a good thing for this horse for the time being.

All went well, he loaded pretty quickly and he's settled into his stall. He is small - has no muscle tone as he has not been turned out in a very long time.

Here he is off the trailer with his new owner - my BO

and in his stall :)

Any help would be appreciated. Lucky will eventually be rehomed. Right now we are accepting any kind of donation as it goes a long way!

that ad photo makes me sick to my stomach. if that was a dog, the SPCA would be after them. Why do people get to abuse horses in the name of 'training'?

BUT thank god for people like you and your BO. Poor baby is lucky lucky lucky.

Ironcially the horses name already was "lucky" - very fitting isn't it.

I have $135.00 collected thus far.

Fingers crossed that we will be able to collect as much as possible - even if its $5 here and there! It all adds up.

Shavings and dewormed have been donated too!

"Lucky" sure is Lucky. We want to express our appreciation and heartfelt thanks for all of the received and incoming donations for Lucky’s necessary medical needs. While there are many other horses out there in need our help, we can now proudly say that Lucky will no longer one of them. Lucky’s new life is just beginning, there will be plenty of challenges with his recovery and rehabilitation however; you’ve enabled him to have his second chance and for that we can never thank you enough.

He did good! I am going to visit him after work.

Here he is in La-La land!

I love his "eye liner" some of his features are very dainty (the Arab in him)

Before I head out I am going to pick him up a rope halter and some treats! :) I feel very proud to have been a part in this. The horse isn't "mine" he is my barn owners but I feel somewhat responsible for his future as we did this as a group project.

Step one has been accomplished quite quickly. Arrived Friday - gelded Tuesday! Now, we just have to give him some time, let him get used to the "normal world" around him.. and hopefully in time we will have a well behaved little horse that will never end up at an auction or slaughter house.

So glad to hear that Lucky did OK today. Tuesday seems to be a popular day for gelding...Imarowdyrebel had a colt gelded today as well. I am sure this is a huge step for Lucky to get on the right track. With handling and patience, he will be a lovely boy. W-I-W, you and all involved have done a very good thing.

Thanks Val!!

Here he is in his new halter I got him! I think he looks snazzy in baby blue.. can't wait to get some photos of him out and about but that won't be for another few weeks. He was a little worked up, hooping and hollering today but BO was doing tractor work and horses were coming in and out.. Willow was across the alley way from him and it was so cute to see them trying to reach one another over their stalls. (just cell phone photos they suck!!)

Helping a horse in need 535455_10150720923295665_505490664_10028452_336046508_n

Hopefully Lucky makes the rest of the journey easy for us. He was quite the cuddle bug over his stall today.. I think that once he learns some boundaries and gets out of that "stud" mind frame it will all come together and I'm sure we can find him a lovely home!

He looks sad in this one! but I caught him turning his head. He needs to put onweight & muscle (tag is still on his halter lol) Excuse the dirt! he went down in some pooh when he had his "procedure" done. Yes his stall has bedding - we were cleaning it and has him in this stall while we prepared it for him.

The vet said his man parts were larger than what he's seen in adult Clydesdales... Of course my BO had to show me a photo first thing.. yuck!!

I groomed lucky, worked a bit on the lead rope, and walked him around the barn. I quite enjoy him!

UPDATE:

Lucky is finally settling down. Thank gosh for the castration!! Its like night and day without those jewels.

I believe that he's only every been lunged and not "lead" around often.. He will strike toward you, and did turn out of the circle and buck however at this post it is more of an excitement thing. Lets out a big fart and then does it. This could be attributed to the fact that he's never had socialization with other horses.. I personally feel his behaviour is "playful" however we humans don't play with an 800 pound animals and he's just got to learn that over time. When I work him I wear a helmet and carry a crop for just in case reminders.

My mare loooooved him last week. This week she walked by and told him to get lost. I think that she knows he's no good to her now hahaha. He is still stalled but being hand walked outside.

Here are photos I took last night (he had just rolled in his stall)

Oh my word!! I thank you so much for helping that poor horse!! I sent a very to the point rude message to the owner who had this horse before you bought him.

Glad to see he has a new home!
