There hasn't been too much activity on the site lately but I am hoping that anyone who peeps in might have had some experience with using Dexamethasone.....used for helping a horse with a breathing problem.
My question is this: Even though the horse has shown marked improvement by the third day of treatment, should he continue to receive the Dex for the suggested time (one week of a packet daily...followed by a week of every second day). Is it something like when we humans are prescribed an anti-biotic and urged to complete the whole treatment even though we seem to be "cured"?
There seems to be a link between using Dex and laminitis also. I expect this would be with long-term use.
At any rate, any experiences will be much appreciated. I haven't given too many details but would like to get some input please.
Thanks! Hoping all are enjoying their summer and their horses are happy!

It is a steroid, so when you take him off it, you should take him off slowly I have given it for 5 days then half dose every other day for a few days Hope this helps. I have not used it very often, maybe others are regular users.

Is there a difference between steroid and corticosteroid (which I understand Dexamethasone to be).
Do you mind telling why you gave the Dex? Was it a one time thing?
Thanks.
