When your horse was gelded did your vet leave him standing or lay him down?

Your preference if you've seen both procedures?

We had some people looking at a horse the other day and we were having this discussion with them and I found their opinions very interesting and curious to hear from others...

The boys geld cattle themselves as opposed to elastics for the most part and they always leave the bulls standing which makes me wonder why we have the notion to lay horses down? and not implying because they leave cattle standing that's the right thing to do just trying to compare something somewhat similar that I am familiar with...

Do you think leaving them standing increases the possibility of having their intestines fall through?

From my experience horses that are layed down take longer to heal but there are many other variables (different horses/different vets) that may play a huge factor in that observation that I'm not really taking into consideration.

The last one I saw gelded the vet layed down. Her reasoning was that even a tranqed horse can muster enough strength to kick out if they really wanted to and she wouldn't want her head to be in the way of that. It was just safer for everyone if he was down. She said when in school she was taught both ways, but this was the preferred method.

Both Prince (at 7 months old) and George (at 11 years old) were down. I think it was my vets preference to do Prince laying down. He said that it gave him a better angle to see and make sure he got all the tissue out. I'm not sure why the vet (a different vet) did George laying down, I think it was because it was a bit of a higher risk given his age.

ETA: There was barely any swelling with Prince and no complications. George's swelling was painful to look at and took a very long time to go away. He had a pocket of fluid that migrated from his belly button up his chest before it was finally reabsorbed. That took about 6 weeks. Of course, when he was done he was still at the track and was in a stall 24/7 except for a 20 min jog on the track and 30 mins in the round pen per day. 24/7 movement would have greatly reduced the swelling.

All the horses I have seen done have been left standing, I've never seen a horse laid down.

I had one done laying done and one done standing. The colt that was laying down was very swollen and it took alot longer for the swelling to go down. The colt that was standing up had minimal swelling.

I'm just waiting for an appt to get Lord Gord gelded. Do you think he'd be better off standing or laying down? Either way, I know there's going to be alot of whining!
