| Okay I`m not sure if I posted this on here or on the AR forum but here it is again. Almost 3 years ago I let one of my mares go as a companion. After careful consideration and vet response I did not want to use her as a brood mare (stifle problems) and with being away at school I was not committing the time and attention she deserved to have. So I decided to let her go to another family. Their grandkids would fawn all over her etc. Drove her down to her new place and what a sight. 26 acres of pasture, a run in shed and 3 other horse friends. Fast forward to spring of this year... (2010)... She is about 150 underweight, heavy in foal and no longer is the pasture big enough to support the growing number of horses (Last count was 15). Recently saw her advertised for sale now that the colt is weaned. I contacted the owners and I can have her back, I just have to go pick her up. So now I`m at a cross roads. Do I take her in for the winter, gain her up and try my luck again, do I leave her be and see if someone else with a heart picks her up for the cheap asking price and pray it`s not a kill buyer, or do I get her and keep her. At least I know she will be treated well with me again. Mind you this horse and I don`t see eye to eye but I feel like I owe this to her. I put her in that situation to begin with. I didn`t create the predicament that the new owners have however I let her go there. This is driving me nuts. It will give me 6 horses to over winter. Blah. It`s doable but not an ideal situation. She will cost to gain up, although she is an exceptionally easy keeper once up to weight... Frig... Ideas anyone. Do I sound nuts to even consider this. | |

| Go get her. I know it is bothering you, and if you can afford to do it at all, you will feel so much better. Plus, if she is in foal, with stifle issues, she may need the care a wise horseperson such as yourself knows to provide. | |

| I'm with the rest...go get the poor girlie. I know all about the "I feel like I owe it to her" feeling, and all we end up doing for our voiceless fur buddies...been there, bought the t-shirt. Sounds like you will feel better knowing she is in a better environment. Good luck... | |

| OHH my that is heart wrenching. I have to say I'm with everyone else.. GO AND GET HER. At least you will know you did all you could for her. I can't believe the difference in her. I can't imagine some one else would purchase her in that kind of shape.
Let us know how it goes. | |

| My hold back is the fact that it will give me 6 horses 5 stalls. Also the cost to feed another one. It will stress the finances. I'm working on a lean to and I have a continuous source of round bale hay spoken for. If she is still there by the weekend I"m bringing her home.
I'm going to keep her blanketed and keep her outside for now. If things look bad I will put my healthier horses out and keep her in. I hate doing things like this at this time of year. It's really not ideal however, she needs groceries and much needed TLC.

| I think you'll regret it if you don't go and get her. It'll haunt you forever. But at the same time, try to rehome her. Advertise her through forums like this and hopefully a new home will come along. She looks like she is in poor shape. This is a terrible time of year to be "up a horse", but if you can get the lean-to shelter up and have some extra blankets I'm sure she'd be better off than where she is.
Let us know how the situtation turns out.

| As much as I hate to say this and I do feel your pain when it comes to affording to feed another horse,You do owe it to her to get her out of the situation she is in!! Even!! ( And this is the hard part) If you take her and put her down it is much better then her starving to death over the winter! As she stands right now if something is not done chances are she will die a slow painful death!!! I am not trying to make you feel bad or judging you in any way but you asked for our advise and this is mine! I think tammy said it well when she said this will haunt you if you don't do something!! I wish you luck! | |

| I talked to them yesterday and they have a family in L-town interested in her. I know them well. It will work if they decide to take her. I said if it fell through I would pick her up Monday night. | |

| The woman is making transportation arrangements to pick her up tomorrow. So I guess she is going to be a companion further down the valley. That was the last email I received from the current owners. They will call me tomorrow. | |
