With several cattle pennings around the Maritimes one of the clubs here on the Island has decided to go with sortings this year...

I have to agree with alot of the pros that were mentioned...

- easier on the cattle, smaller area for them to run and also less cattle are used
- cheaper to run on a team thus allowing a rider to go on more teams
- things seem to move a little quicker, maybe less setting up?
- really tests the abilities of your horse to get under itself and work cows in a smaller area

Anyhoo I think it is going to be a neifty venture and I hope it proves successful. We will be hosting a penning and a sorting this year so I guess we'll see how many folks are willing to try something new.

All the new stuff is always such a lonnnnnnnggggg drive! But it sounds like fun!

The new barn we're moving to has a small herd next door that are frequently loose along with 3 lamas  so we may get some cow experience that way...lol

We have done quite a few sortings; by done, I mean ridden in, lol. I love them, gets good finesse control of the horse, and was a great, intimate atmosphere to hang out in when not actually sorting. It really sharpens up front end control, and your communication skills with your partner.

It might be interesting to try Campdrafting. It is a sport that is very popular in Australia. You have to move one heifer/steer around a pattern. Here is a website.

It looks fun!
