I’m in the grocery store yesterday and a little girl, maybe seven or eight, is going through the green peppers. She picks one up, looks at it from all angles, makes an exasperated sound and puts it down. She repeats this several times. I’m wondering if she is looking for the perfect shape or if she is finding peppers with bad spots on them.
I reach for a pepper and see they are all uniformly shiny, firm and bright green.
After one more grunt the little girl picks up yet another pepper, turns to me and asks, “Are these real?”
