ROSIE'S EYE UPDATE - PICTURES ADDED

I'm not sure if any of you remember my dog Rosie from "another" board that I used to frequent. About a month ago she poked herself in the eye with a stick (or so we think). Since then she has been on drops 6X/day and going for a weekly recheck. Unfortunately her eye has not healed - it hasn't gotten any worse, but it hasn't gotten better. Today she had another recheck and the news wasn't good. I was hoping the vet would just recommend that I change her name to Winky, but I suppose that wasn't really an option. Tomorrow morning she has to go in and have a bit of "work" done. First they are going to scrape her eye to promote healing (just like laser surgery for people - been there, done that). Then they are going to remove two small blobs (they call them tumours - I prefer blobs) from underneath her upper eyelid. They don't think that they are the reason the eye isn't healing, but if she's under they may as well take them off, just to be sure. After that's all done they are going to stretch her lower 3rd eyelid up and sew it to the top of her eyelid so that the eye can (or better damn well) heal. She has to be under the "cone" of silence for 10 days. All you dog owners know what a friggin nightmare those cones are. The worst part for her is that she's going to be under house arrest for at least 10 days, with only supervised excursions outdoors. She will NOT be impressed with this.

Tonight she had to fast after 6:00 so has had to be be escorted outside to do her business. The vet said that fasting included NOT eating any horse poop! Hmmm ... no buffet for Rosie tonight!

Anyway, I'll try to give an update tomorrow evening after life settles down a bit. I've been through lots of dogs' surgeries before but for some reason this one is making me sick to my stomach. I'm hoping it's because of the age factor (she's 12.5 now) and not vibes from a higher power. Off to take a sleeping pill for the night now. Gotta love my little blue friends .....

Poor girl, I will be thinking of her today too...........I dont like folks playing with my eyes either........but so far they have not said I have to wear the cone!!!!!!!! :geek:

hahah. I made it from a sheepsking browband halter cover........the regular eye patch thing is so annoying and hard but the sheepskin is heavenly.

Rosie came home at 6:30 last night. The surgery went well. Apparently what had happened was that when her eye was trying to heal, the new cells weren't adhering very well and would flake off. They had to debride a fair area (ie: scrape the hell out of her eye). Blobs have been removed. You can barely see those stitches and luckily they are self-dissolving. She has to go back in 7 days to have the plastic drain tube removed (hopefully) and then they can lower her third eyelid. There is a bit of discharge but it's not as gruesome as I had thought it would be. :D

The biggest challenge is going to be that damn cone! She's bumping into everything. It's like having a blind person in the house - if a chair is left out from the table she hits it. She keeps trying to go to her usual places to lay down but doesn't fit. Last night she tried to turn around in her bed (which is right beside mine) and got stuck between the wall and the side of my bed. Cone wedgie !!!!! The eye must be bugging her because she keeps scratching at the cone. Guess that's why it's there.

Last night she was allowed to have a bit of rice around 9:00. I just about bust a gut laughing. I had to hand feed her because her head is so far up the cone that she can't reach her dish. As she was licking the rice out of my hand some of it would drop into the cone. then she's try to lick the droppings and of course couldn't get to them. Talk about frustrating!

Kayla felt sorry for Rosie for the first few minutes and gave her some nice hugs. Then while kissing Rosie's nose she discovered that her voice would echo inside the cone. OH ME NERVES !!!!!!!!

I feel like I aged about 8 years in the past 24 hours. It was REALLY strange not having Rosie beside me at every step yesterday. Empty, empty life ... They certainly worm their way into our hearts and lives. Thanks for all the positive thoughts and vibes. They worked their usual magic! :)

Perfect..........and I can just imagine her banging around in the house.......the cone must add an extra two or three foot circumference around her head........I never understood how all those OLD NUNS did it either..........but never discovered an Echo..........hahahahaha........good job it didn't sound like a musical instrument too.............I'm glad she is doing fine and no more worries. :cheers:

Rosie is doing well. She's really not impressed that she doesn't get to go to the barn with me. I'm sure she'll get used to the new routine in a few days. Here are a few pictures that I took tonight.

I hope she feels better soon and gets that darn cone off.. I hate those things.. I know she needs it.. but I hate them.. I remember when our lab had one .. it drove me nuts.. and I didn't have a child echoing in on it either.. I chuckled when you said that.. lol...

shoot......the new emoticons we tried to add yesterday are not working.......I was sending her a group hug......oh well hope she is cheerier today.

Old Rose is doing much the same today. Totally PISSED that she can't go to the barn. Each time I take her outside on the leash she starts dragging me in that direction. Things are looking good though. We may have to repaint the house after she gets the cone off because she spends most of her time getting it caught and then dragging it along the wall.

CONES SUCK !!!!
