Lets talk studs

Well ladies..... need to pick your brains.

We are thinking hard about breeding my mare, she is 12 and I have noticed a small lump under her tail, she is grey so been there done that, know what is coming.

I am looking for a qh stud and well I am struggling with the options.
So can you share some of your fave stud choices.

I am looking for something a bit taller, Imagine is 14.2 so I would like a stud no shorter then 15hh.

Also wanting some info on AI, how to go about it etc.

I'd suggest Jane McInnis's APHA stallion but if you're thinking strictly QH I guess that leaves him out. He is a bigger horse with all kinds of bone.

And if you're thinking right here on the Island we have two stallions both are performance bred but neither are any bigger than 14'3 hands on a good day.

Kimball Johnson also has two fantastic performance stallions but both of them would be under the 14'3 hand mark as well.

Hmm...you know who has a bigger QH stallion is Judy Burgoyne - Peppa Joe, he was here for a month training a few years ago. He is a big boy. If you google Black River Farms, PEI I think you'll find their website.

I'm trying to think who else here on the Island...Dylan Thompson has two APHA studs and the older of the two throws all kinds of size but again a Paint not a QH. We actually had a son of his here this spring who was 16'2 hands (the mare might have been all of 14'3) he really stamps his babies with size.

AI can get really expensive in a hurry if you're mare doesn't catch the first time. If you want some particulars on the procedure I can definitely fill you in. We had the college do everything for us and we were so pleased with them. I think it is important to look at how much you're willing to spend and then see if AI is even an option. We forgot alot of hidden costs when we did the calculations and ended up sick to our stomachs when the bill came in.

I don't think I'm much help as everything I like seems to come in under 14'3 hands...

Speaking of Jane's boys, I looooove her QH! He's definitely the one I'd breed Belle to if I was going to breed her (and I very nearly made a phone call on a few occasions!)

If i was going to breed my mare i would have to go for Ride-em's "Rocket" can't think of his registered name is it "Salty hobby boy" or some thing like that, i think it would be hard to beat him for temperment and stunning looks, and all his babies are beautiful

I must throw in another vote for Rocket (aka Salty Hobby Boy), he is a stunning Buckskin stallion with a great head and mind, all of his babies that I have met and ridden are clam, quiet and quick learners. All of his babies are also very athletic and can do anything you want them to!

My paint mare is bred to Rocket for a March 2010 baby! I can't wait to see what we get.

In order to suggest a stallion though, I think we need to know what you plan to do with the foal? Are you looking for pleasure, halter, performance? Also what is your mares breeding?

I would give my right arm to bred her to Rocket, I just can not foresee it happening at this point due to trailering etc. However, who knows what the future may hold.
I was telling hubby about him and let him know hes a buckskin (hes partial and I figured I might get some leverage) He was very excited about the chance of a buckskin baby. so fingers crossed.

To give you all a little back ground on my mare.
She is a 14.2 grey half qh. Her sire was Prince Rascal who goes back to king, leo, whimpy. peter mcque, plaudit.....
I am looking for an english mount ( eventing, pleasure) but also maybe gaming, have recently started Image on this,
Image has great conformation and temperment so with all that said what I dont like about her is that she is on the smaller side and a complete tank.

Well for everything you are saying Rocket would be a good prospect he is a pretty all around horse and his babies pretty well do it all lol...

I am in love with Rocket as well....Alround athletic horse....

I would breed our mare to him, but Rocket is her dad....lol....Lovely horse and she is and has given us a beautiful filly...
Hey Judy....Does it make you feel old knowing we have a grand-daughter of Rocket's???

so as of right now the plan is to bred her next spring(fingers crossed for Rocket)
I would love to bred her this spring but with hubby getting his kidney transplant I have to hold off.

If trailering the mare to a stud is an issue, then you will not be able to AI. You have to take the mare to Paul Johnson for at least 5 days , so she can be ultrasounded each day. That is the only way you will know when she is going to ovulate so the chilled semen can be shipped.
It is 2 days shipping in N America, so timing is crucial.

humm.... gotta ask who is Paul Johnston?

I was talking to Dr. Loftstead at the AVC, I actually did a 3 hour session with him on AI.
He never mentioned having to take the mares to another location for 5 days.


btw Trailering is only an issues as Rocket is so far away from my place. If I stay on the Island its not an issue :flower:

3 hours and they never mentioned doing US every day?
How else can they tell when to inseminate? At a minimum of $3000 for the semen, collection, shipping and vet costs both ends, you better hope they get it the first time.
Paul Johnson is the vet at Avon Animal Hospital. He does AI every year with both chilled and frozen semen and embryo transplants, so he is very good.
It slipped past me that you are on the Island where the Vet College is.
