Thanks everybody. I was talking to my cousin (Jean's son) a little while ago and he said that there wasn't any brain activity so it's just the machines keeping her alive. For some reason they have decided to keep her hooked up for another few days (I guess holding out hope). I'm not sure if I agree with this course of action but in their situation I haven't a clue what I'd do.

Here is what happened. Yesterday Cal and Jean were driving into Carbonear (the next town up) to do some shopping. Cal was driving and gabbing to Jean when he noticed that she wasn't talking back to him (VERY rare!). He looked over and she was slumped in her seat so he pulled the van over and ran over to her side to check on her. She wasn't breathing so he started AR. No pulse so he stopped AR and raced to the hospital with her. It took him appox 6 minutes to get there and he said when he pulled up to the emergency door her nose was already turning blue. She was rushed in and they started working on her right away. After 10 times shocking her they did get a faint pulse (which was more than they thought they'd get) but no blood pressure. They continued working on her and then got the pulse and a blood pressure reading.

By this morning they had confirmed that there wasn't any brain stem activity and that in all likelihood she wouldn't recover. It was only the machines that were keeping her body going. The doc said that if she ever had regained consciousness she'd be in a vegetative state for the rest of her life.

It's going to be a hard few days for sure. Jean was only 63 and didn't have any history of heart disease. Lord Gord is very upset - Jean was like a mother to him. He lived with her while he was going to College. She was a special woman who will be dearly missed.

So please everyone, seize the day and be kind to yourselves. We just never know when our time here is over.
