I used to feed "Source" to my mare. It is expensive but the results were amazing. I now feed "SeaBlend" same results with her coat and well being. It is made in Nova Scotia and is cheaper than Source. I would recommend it. It has extra selenium that out soils are missing here in N.B. Just takes a tablespoon per day. There is a website: SeaBoost.ca.

I buy kelp meal from Co-op and feed it free choice. horses that haven't seen it before might take a while to eat it, OR might eat a bucket full a day for the first week LOL ... cause they are missing something! they soon level out to ta nibble here and there daily.

just a note - SeaBlend has an irrelevantly small amount of selenium.

I know I'm a little dissapointed about that as I wanted him to have it free choice but I don't dare call our co-op as they don't know if there coming or going :(

The Kelp meal we feed comes from the Coop in Brooklyn but it doesn't have added Selenium. Tidal Organics Inc. from Yarmouth makes it. We give 1/4 a day sprinkled over their F&F, soy beans & vitamins. I'm looking to add Selenium though, thanks for adding that pic of the Kelp with it. Will look at that.

the selenium in kelp is what's there naturally. Kelp meal is simply dried kelp ground up and bagged. LOTS of micro-nutrients that many fields are depleted of.

That mineral mix has WAY TOO MUCH IRON! The other mineral levels are not too bad BUT you never know if you need them at that balance or not AND the iron levels create an ADDED NEED for more copper and zinc and throw the balances way out of whack. So it doesn't work for horses. (extra iron blocks the uptake of copper and zinc)

ANY product with selenium CAN NEVER be fed free choice!!!! Selenium is toxic above needed amounts. Horses need 2mg/day.

Feed supplements don't have enough selenium so you can't overdose your horse. But then you don't get enough.

I went to buying my minerals separately and doing a custom mix. It's all in another thread on here somewhere.

I will call the vet Monday to ask him about the iron content..He made this mineral mix based on our lack of nutrients in our soil here in northern NB.I dont want a product to which I can feed free choice...I would rather feed it at meal time...

Really though, unless you're testing your hay there is no way to know if this mineral mix is good or bad. Mineral values can differ from hay cut in the same field from one year to the next. A hay test is fairly cheap, less than $100 and to get setup with the individual minerals that you would feed (in meal form, not free choice) is fairly inexpensive as well.

It's a complete waist of money having my hay tested, my round bales come from different fields...different fields, different soil..,So, I really have to shoot in the dark when it comes to minerals....He is doing great on those minerals, he was getting the same stuff made by a different vet..he has been on them since last winter...

If you took a sample from many different bales it would give you a rough idea. Do you get all your hay from the same guy?

I agree about the iron...our soils in NS and PEI are known to be very high in it... adding more will just block out your copper and Magnesium etc.

High iron is known to cause mud fever, rain rot and other skin issues. Which makes sense for our area.. We hear about this problem all the time.

I tested my pasture and balanced accordingly... Will do the same for my hay. I have one supplier but different fields. I will just go to where he stores it and get an average of all his bales there... It's Better then nothing. :)
